2013 AbelCine Documentary Grant – Official Rules & Conditions
Tuesday, 23 July 2013
Participation is open to legal residents of the United States who are at least 18 years old at the time of entry. Employees, independent contractors, officers, and directors of AbelCine (SPONSOR), their affiliates, subsidiaries, advertising, promotion and fulfillment agencies, vendors, legal advisors, and the immediate family members and persons living in the same household of such persons are not eligible to participate. Former employees who have performed services for SPONSOR in the past six (6) months are not eligible. Submissions may be disqualified at any time for non-compliance with these Rules & Conditions. SPONSOR makes the final determination as to which submissions are eligible.
All participants must have a Vimeo account, although it is not necessary to have a Vimeo Plus or Vimeo PRO account. To create an account, visit Vimeo.com. Vimeo IS NOT a sponsor of the 2013 AbelCine Documentary Grant (GRANT) and participants agree to release Vimeo from any liability related to the GRANT.
Submitting an application for the GRANT constitutes entrant’s full unconditional agreement and acceptance of these Terms & Conditions. To be eligible for awards, entrants must ensure their completed submissions are received by 11:59pm EDT on August 27, 2013.
Awarding of Grants
After all video pitches are submitted, ten (10) finalists will be selected based on the highest number of likes from the Vimeo community during the active voting dates (12am EST August 28 – 12am EST September 24). The ten finalists will be notified and have their pitches featured in the 2013 AbelCine Documentary Grant Vimeo group.
Once the ten (10) finalists have been identified, a panel of judges (comprised of AbelCine & industry experts, as well as special guest filmmakers Mark Benjamin, Ellen Kuras, ASC, and Peter Schnall) will review each video pitch and choose three (3) winners to receive a grant. The panel will take into consideration criteria such as: the strength of the submission, the compelling nature of the topic, and the likelihood that the finished project will exemplify the art of non-fiction storytelling.
The grants will be awarded by SPONSOR to the person or entity whose name appears on the submission form. GRANT awardees assume all liability for any damage caused or claimed to be caused by participation or by any prize and release SPONSOR from any such liability.
Winners will be required to choose from three Canon C300 base packages. The packages are as follows:
- Canon C300PL Camera
- Two Canon Cine Compact Zooms (15.5-47 T2.8, 30-105 T2.8)
- Canon C300EF Camera
- Set of five Canon Cine Primes (14mm T1.3, 24mm T1.5, 50mm T1.3, 85mm T1.3, 135mm T2.2)
- Canon C300EF Camera
- Set of three Canon EF Zooms (16-35 T2.8, 24-70 T2.8, 70-200 T2.8)
Each package has a different daily rate – winners can work with AbelCine rentals to customize their package and best utilize their allotted GRANT amount. Any equipment desired above the amount of the GRANT can be rented at a 25% discount. GRANT must be used within one year.
All three GRANT awardees will also receive access to Endcrawl, a cloud-based scrolling credits service, with an “Unlimited DPX” tier, which will entitle them to unlimited 2K or HD DPX renders and unlimited 1K H.264 renders. Please note: “Unlimited renders” applies on a per project (not per user) basis. Visit Endcrawl.com for more information.
GRANT awardees will be required to provide a copy of a certificate of insurance naming Abel Cine Tech, Inc. as the certificate holder and loss payee with respect to the Canon C300, its accessories and all components rented from AbelCine. Coverage must include full replacement cost value over the period of time the equipment will be out of AbelCine’s control. In addition, GRANT awardees are required to leave a security deposit that will be returned after the equipment has been checked in by AbelCine’s technicians. This deposit must be in the amount of the deductible of the aforementioned insurance certificate.
Once the three (3) GRANT awardees are announced, it is their responsibility to contact AbelCine’s rental department to put together and schedule their equipment package.
Equipment can be obtained from one of AbelCine’s locations (New York, NY or Burbank, CA). Finalists should inquire if they are unable to travel to New York or Burbank.
All GRANT recipients are required to include the following in their completed project credits:
“Canon C300 rental package and lenses provided through the 2013 AbelCine Documentary Grant.”
Deliverables & Promotional Rights
SPONSOR will be able to issue press releases about the project, have the right to interview the Director of Photography and Director, take still photography shots, and have non-exclusive rights to use any number of the most striking/beautiful/gritty sequences of the project, or a trailer for the project. Promotion might also be given on websites, as well as through social channels.
As part of the submission process, entrants will be asked to answer a few questions about the inspiration behind their documentary idea. These responses may be used for promotional purposes by SPONSOR.
SPONSOR will have the right to copy, distribute, and otherwise utilize all submitted materials and product for marketing use. Proper credit will be given to creators in all copies. By accepting any prizes, winners agree to the use of their name, voice, or likeness for the purpose of trade, advertising, or promotion without further compensation, unless prohibited by law.
Creators will retain full ownership of their completed films.
