In this issue of The Scene at Abel Rental we’ll update you on the new cameras and lenses we’ve added to our rental inventory for every level of production from Digital Cinema to HDSLR shooting.
Sony HDCAM SRW-9000 – Ultimate Quality in an Affordable and Portable Package
Abel is the first rental house in the country to rent the new Sony SRW-9000 camera. It’s a 2/3” B4-mount 3-CCD camera, which shoots full raster 1920×1080 to an onboard HDCAM SR recorder. The SRW-9000 can shoot 4:4:4 up to 60p and won’t break your back when shoulder operated. Think of it as a Digital Cinema camera in an ENG profile. The SRW-9000 is a fully integrated system that records to one of the highest-quality, industry-standard formats in a single lightweight, compact and affordable package. We have it kitted with a color viewfinder, all the accessory boards and support for video style or film style baseplates (your choice).
EX Grows Up With the PMW-350
The Sony PMW-EX3 is an incredibly popular camera, but sometimes one wants just a little more – better balance on the shoulder, larger sensor, greater low light sensitivity. The new PMW-350 (aka EX350) offers a 2/3” 3-CMOS sensor block shooting full raster 1920×1080 at up to 30p (60p at 720 resolution). It still records to SxS cards and comes with a great color viewfinder. It has about the same size, weight and power consumption as the EX3, but with a far more ergonomic body design. The EX350 can use any B4 lens, but there’s also an excellent Fujinon 8x zoom that’s made especially for the EX350 and looks great.
Angenieux Zooms So Nice It Makes Us Blush Rouge
Abel now rents both Angenieux Optimo DP Rouge zooms for Digital Cinema. The 16-42 T2.8 and 30-80 T2.8 are small (7.5” long) and lightweight (4.2 lbs). These lenses are designed for handheld use on Digital Cinema cameras such as the RED One and the Phantom HD Gold, but their optical performance is so high they can be left on the camera all the time. Abel also rents the complete line of Angenieux Optimo zooms (24-290, 17-80, 15-40, 28-76).
Zeiss is Nice
Our Canon 7D HDSLR kits are renting like crazy, but clients want more lens options. So, we now offer a set of eight Zeiss ZF T* prime lenses. These lenses are manual focus, and we’ve added geared rings to fit them to a follow focus. We also removed the click-stops to the iris rings for increased iris control. The ZF lenses are in Nikon mount, but we include an adapter to Canon EOS mount for every lens so that they can be used on the Canon camera as well.
Recording In a Flash: Convergent Design’s nanoFlash
Want to shoot on that favorite camera but don’t want it on tape? Want better compression? Need a tiny recorder? The Convergent Design nanoFlash captures in XDCAM codecs with variations of high bitrate compression that make for excellent recording quality. It’s small and light enough to be camera-mountable and accepts HD-SDI & HDMI signals (and even converts between them – nice for monitoring). Media is a pair of CF card slots. We have cables and mounts to use the nanoFlash with any camera. With the nanoFlash, an EX3 records a much higher quality image with dramatically less compression. The same is true for dozens of other cameras. From the top down, the nanoFlash makes a brilliant companion to the new SRW9000, recording high-quality proxies so that you can wait to rent an expensive HDCAM SR deck until the final conform.
