Introducing the Latest in Film Technology: 2-perf
Aaton continues to introduce inventive new film cameras. Their latest is the Penelope, a 35mm 2-perf/3-perf switchable shoulder-mount camera. Shooting with the Penelope, a 400’ mag running 2-perf at 24fps will last for almost nine minutes and yield a widescreen image nearly as big as Super35, at a fraction of the cost. Penelope is quiet and slim, with a bright clear viewfinder and an excellent progressive-scan videotap.
Recently, The Fighter, the first American feature shot on Penelope cameras, wrapped production. Abel supplied two Penelopes for the 2-perf production. The Fighter was directed by David O. Russell, photographed by DP Hoyte Van Hoytema and stars Mark Wahlberg, Christian Bale and Amy Adams. To learn more about the project, check out Moe Shore’s blog on CineTechnica.
Slumdoggin’ at Abel
Anthony Dodd Mantle won this year’s Oscar for Best Cinematography for Slumdog Millionaire, predominantly photographed on the Silicon Imaging SI-2K camera. The camera’s sensor head (the Mini) is removable from the main camera body, allowing for unique rigging opportunities. Abel rents the SI-2K in the full camera configuration with the option to split off the Mini head. The SI-2K is a complete Digital Cinema camera system with an interchangeable lens mount for 16mm & 35mm PL lenses, as well as 2/3” B4 HD video and even C-mount glass.
Wide Gets Wider – and Longer Too!
Canon recently came out with a new wide-angle zoom for 2/3” HD. The 14×4.3 IRSE features an incredibly wide 4.3mm (more than 96 degree) low distortion image with a close focus of just one foot in front of the lens. The long end extends to 60mm and includes a 2x extender should one need to go even farther. It’s lightweight and sharp with great contrast and matches well with the rest of the Canon line.
